Twin wire mesh fencing, installed in Dutch Limburg
Twin wire mesh fencing (dubbelstaafmat) is made of welded steel panels with two horizontal wires at each crossing. It is strong, but you can see through it. ZuidHek installs it in 6/5/6 or 8/6/8, usually in anthracite or black, with matching gates and optional windscreen cloth. It suits front gardens, gardens with a dog and business sites in South Limburg.

Choose twin wire mesh if you want a clear boundary without blocking the view. The fence keeps a dog or playing children in, lets light and wind through and needs almost no maintenance. That is why you often see it in front gardens, around swimming pools and play areas, and along business sites.
The panels go between steel posts with clamps or strips. With twin wire mesh you see every error: a post that is one centimetre out of line shows as a kink along the whole length. That is why we put every post on a string line and check the height with the laser.
A gate in the same colour and mesh completes the fence. If you want more privacy, windscreen cloth can go on the fence. In that case, read the advice below about wind load.
Specifications
- Panels
- Welded steel panels with two horizontal wires at each crossing, usually galvanised and powder-coated.
- Wire thickness
- 6/5/6 or 8/6/8: the thickness in millimetres of the horizontal, the vertical and again the horizontal wire. 8/6/8 is heavier and stiffer.
- Mesh
- Usually 200×50 mm.
- Colour
- Anthracite (RAL 7016) and black (RAL 9005) are the most common.
- Sizes
- A panel is usually about 2.5 m wide. Heights go up in steps of about 20 cm, from about 0.6 m to 2 m.
- Posts
- Steel posts in the same colour, with clamps or strips for the panels, set in concrete.
- Post depth
- About one third of the post length in the ground. With windscreen cloth, deeper or with a heavier footing.
- 6/5/6
- Enough for most gardens. Strong enough for a dog and playing children, lighter and more affordable than 8/6/8.
- 8/6/8
- Thicker wire, so stiffer and harder to bend. For business sites, tall fences and fences that will get windscreen cloth.
- With gate
- A single pedestrian gate or double gates for the driveway, in the same colour and mesh as the fence.
- With windscreen cloth
- Cloth on the panels gives privacy and breaks the wind. The fence then catches much more wind, so we choose the posts and footings to match.
How we install it
- 1
Setting out
String line along the run, laser for the height. On sloping ground we decide beforehand whether the panels step down.
- 2
Posts in concrete
We drill the holes with an auger and set the posts in concrete at the right depth. We measure from the gate or a fixed corner, because the post spacing must match the panel width.
- 3
Fitting the panels
The panels are fixed to the posts with clamps or strips, level and at the same height along the whole length.
- 4
Adjusting the gate
We hang the gate and adjust the hinges until it swings freely and the lock closes smoothly against the stop.

Good to know
- 6/5/6 is usually enough for a garden
- For a normal front or back garden, 6/5/6 is enough. 8/6/8 makes sense where the fence takes more force: business sites, tall fences, places where people lean or drive against it, and fences with windscreen cloth.
- Windscreen cloth catches wind
- An open panel lets the wind through. With cloth the fence becomes a sail, and much more force goes onto the posts, clamps and footings. That is possible, but then with deeper or heavier posts, strong fixings and preferably 8/6/8.
- Twin wire mesh is not a privacy screen
- You can see through it. Ivy or a hedge in front of it makes it green and closed after a few seasons. If you want privacy straight away, a composite fence is usually the better choice.
- Watch the height on the street side
- At the front, and on a side next to the street, a boundary fence is usually permit-free up to 1 m. Higher usually needs a permit (omgevingsvergunning). Check this before you choose a tall fence for the front garden.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 6/5/6 and 8/6/8 twin wire mesh?
The numbers are wire thicknesses in millimetres: two horizontal wires of 6 mm with a vertical wire of 5 mm, or two of 8 mm with a vertical wire of 6 mm. 8/6/8 is heavier and stiffer and bends less easily. For a normal garden 6/5/6 is usually enough. For business sites or with windscreen cloth, 8/6/8 is the logical choice.
Can windscreen cloth go on twin wire mesh?
Yes. Windscreen cloth is fixed to the panel with ties and gives privacy and shelter. But a closed cloth catches much more wind than an open panel. The posts, fixings and footings must be designed for that. Without those changes, we advise against full-height cloth on a light, existing fence.
Can I put twin wire mesh in my front garden?
At the front, and on a side next to the street, a boundary fence can usually be up to 1 m high without a permit. Higher usually needs a permit. In Sittard-Geleen the limit is 1 m in the front garden. Other municipalities can differ, so check with the permit check (Vergunningcheck) in the Omgevingsloket.
Which colour of twin wire mesh should I choose?
Anthracite (RAL 7016) and black (RAL 9005) are the common colours. Anthracite blends in with plants and grey paving. Black gives a little more contrast. If possible, choose the same colour as your window frames, gate or other metal in the garden, so it all looks like one whole. Green also exists, but you see it less often.
