Area: fence installation in Dutch Limburg

Our base is Geleen. Most of our work is in South Limburg, but we install fences and gates across Limburg and elsewhere in the Netherlands. For each municipality you can read what to look out for and where to find the rules. The rules are on Dutch government websites, so we link to them and explain the main points here.

Sittard-Geleen: our base

ZuidHek is based on the Breitnerstraat in Geleen. Sittard, Born, Munstergeleen and Limbricht are close by, so a visit to measure is easy to plan here. If you live in Sittard-Geleen, for example near Chemelot or Brightlands, your fence installer is in your own municipality.

Sittard-Geleen uses these rules for boundary fences: up to 1 m high in the front garden, and up to 2 m from 1 m behind the front of the house. For a corner house, a listed building or a protected townscape, other rules may apply. So always check your address in the permit check (Vergunningcheck) on the municipality's Omgevingsplein website.

Many gardens in Sittard and Geleen belong to terraced houses with a back path. A composite fence with a gate in the same line works well there. On the street side, keep to a low fence or a 1 m twin wire mesh fence.

Maastricht

Maastricht

A large part of Maastricht's city centre is a protected townscape (beschermd stadsgezicht), with many listed buildings. There, a boundary fence does not automatically go without a permit, even if it is lower than 2 m. In the centre, back gardens are often only reachable through the house or a narrow passage. Mention this in your request, because posts and boards then go to the back in parts.

Parkstad (Heerlen, Landgraaf, Brunssum, Kerkrade, Simpelveld, Voerendaal)

Heerlen · Landgraaf · Brunssum · Kerkrade · Simpelveld · Voerendaal

Many neighbourhoods in Parkstad are built on a slope, and back gardens here often slope down to the neighbours or the back path. In that case we install the fence in steps, with gravel boards that take up the height difference and hold back the soil. In older neighbourhoods gardens are narrow and the back path is the only access. Each municipality has its own local plan (omgevingsplan). The link below is for Heerlen. In the other municipalities, use the permit check for your address.

Beekdaelen

Nuth · Schinnen · Hulsberg · Schinveld · Amstenrade

Beekdaelen is rural, with villages such as Nuth, Schinnen, Hulsberg and Schinveld and many gardens that border a meadow or field. For a long boundary like that, chain-link or twin wire mesh is often more practical than a solid fence. Chain-link only stays straight if the tension wire is tight and the corner posts are firm. If you want something higher on the street side, check the 1 m rule first.

Stein

Stein · Elsloo · Urmond · Berg aan de Maas · Meers

Stein lies on the Maas and the Julianakanaal. Open land along the water gets more wind, and you notice that on a fence with windscreen cloth: posts, fixings and footings must be designed for it. The old village centres have listed buildings, and stricter rules apply there for a boundary fence. If in doubt, use the permit check first or talk to the municipality beforehand.

Beek

Beek · Spaubeek · Neerbeek · Genhout · Geverik

Around Beek and Spaubeek the land is hilly and gardens often slope. We use the laser to set the height of each section, so a stepped fence has equal steps and the gravel boards hold back the soil. For a front garden or a driveway on the street, the limit without a permit is usually 1 m. Check your address before you choose a higher fence at the front.

Echt-Susteren

Echt · Susteren · Pey · Nieuwstadt · Roosteren

Around Echt and Susteren many houses have a large plot, and in the villages towards the Maas gardens often border fields or meadows. Twin wire mesh or chain-link is an affordable way to close off a long boundary there. If your plot is close to the Maas or a stream, also ask whether the water board (waterschap) has rules for building along the bank.

Roermond

Roermond · Herten · Swalmen · Maasniel · Asenray

The historic centre of Roermond is a protected townscape. For a listed building or within that area, stricter rules apply, also for a garden wall or fence. In new-build areas back gardens are often small and border a back path. A composite fence with a gate onto the path keeps the garden closed, without the gate taking up space on the patio.

Weert

Weert · Stramproy · Tungelroy · Altweerterheide

Around Weert the soil is mostly sand. Posts stand well in it, but loose sand needs a deep enough post hole and sometimes a precast concrete footing. In new-build areas back gardens often share a long boundary with the neighbours. Agree beforehand whether the fence goes on the boundary or on your own land, and who pays for which part.

Venlo

Venlo · Blerick · Tegelen · Belfeld · Arcen

Venlo is the furthest city in our work area. If you live in Venlo, Blerick or Tegelen, send photos and measurements with your request. Then we can make a first quote without an extra trip. The soil here is often sandy too, so posts go deeper or get a concrete footing. Along the Maas and on open land, wind plays a bigger role.

Heuvelland (Valkenburg aan de Geul, Gulpen-Wittem, Eijsden-Margraten, Vaals, Meerssen)

Valkenburg aan de Geul · Gulpen-Wittem · Eijsden-Margraten · Vaals · Meerssen

In the Heuvelland, gardens often slope steeply. A fence then does not follow the slope but goes down in steps: each section level, with a gravel board that takes up the difference. Valkenburg, Eijsden and several villages have a protected townscape, and outside the centres there are often extra rules for the landscape. The link is for Valkenburg. In the other municipalities, use the permit check for your address.
