Fence repair and replacement

Repairing a fence makes sense if most posts are still sound and the damage is limited to a few boards, a loose gravel board or one leaning post. If several posts are rotten or broken, replacing is usually wiser. ZuidHek repairs storm damage and leaning posts, and removes and replaces old fences in South Limburg.

Posts set out and in place, ready for the boardsMay 2026

After a storm, it often looks worse than it is. A fence that has blown down usually lies flat because one or two posts have snapped or been pulled out of the ground. The rest can still be used. We then set new posts, deeper and in concrete where needed, and put the existing parts back.

It is different if the wood is rotten at the bottom, the posts lean along the whole line or the fence has been crooked for years. Then you repair a different part every year. At that point replacing is wiser, and you get a fence that stands straight again.

When we replace a fence, we remove the old one: boards, posts, concrete bases and gravel boards. We take the waste away. If the fence is on the property boundary (erfgrens), talk to your neighbours first, because a fence on the boundary usually belongs to you both.

Specifications

Leaning post
We dig the post free, straighten it and fix it again in concrete, or replace it with a new post at the right depth.
Broken wooden post
Replaced with a new post. Patching a rotten post rarely lasts longer than one season.
Concrete post
We straighten a leaning concrete post and fix it again. A broken concrete post is replaced, and the sections next to it must be opened for that.
Boards
Loose or broken boards replaced, where possible in the same material and colour.
Gravel board
Broken or sunken gravel boards replaced and set to the right height again.
Gate
Sagging gate: hinges adjusted or replaced, gate post straightened.
Old fence
Taken down and taken away: boards, posts, concrete bases and gravel boards.
Repair
For damage to a limited part: one or two posts, a few boards or a gravel board. The rest of the fence must still be sound.
Partial replacement
One or more sections rebuilt, joining the existing fence. Keep in mind that new material looks different from old.
Full replacement
Old fence out and taken away, new line set out with a string line and laser, new posts and gravel boards. You can then choose the material again, for example composite or twin wire mesh.

How we install it

  1. 1

    Assessing

From photos or on site, we check which posts are still firm, what state the bottom is in and whether a repair makes sense.

  2. 2

    Removing

Broken parts or the whole old fence come out, including posts and concrete bases. We take the waste away.

  3. 3

    Repairing or rebuilding

New posts in concrete at the right depth, gravel boards at laser height, then the boards or panels.

  4. 4

    Handover

We check the line and height once more, adjust any gate and clean up the work area.

Good to know

First find out why it blew down
A fence blows down because the posts are too shallow, have rotted or catch too much wind. If you put it back exactly as it was, it will be down again after the next storm. Setting the posts deeper or in concrete is often the real repair.
Do not repair what is worn out
Supporting a rotten post with an anchor or an extra batten lasts one season. If the bottom of the whole fence is soft, you pay again after every storm. Then replacing is the wiser choice.
New next to old
New boards next to old ones look different for the first few years. Wood turns grey, and composite changes colour a little at the start. Keep this in mind if you replace only part of the fence.
Boundary and neighbours
A fence on the property boundary is usually jointly owned. You then replace it in agreement with the neighbours, also about the costs. If it is fully on your own land, you decide yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fence that blew down be repaired?

Often, yes. Usually one or two posts have snapped or been pulled out of the ground, and the boards and gravel boards are still intact. We then set new posts deeper and in concrete where needed, and put the existing parts back. If the wood is rotten at the bottom, replacing is wiser.

Can a fence with concrete posts be repaired?

Yes. We dig a leaning concrete post free, straighten it and fix it again in concrete. If the post is broken, we replace it. The boards or gravel boards in the sections next to it come out for a moment. Broken boards or a broken gravel board between good concrete posts can be replaced on their own.

When is replacing a fence better than repairing it?

When several posts are rotten, broken or loose, when the wood is soft at the bottom or when the whole fence leans. Then you keep on repairing. Replacing gives you a new line, set out with a string line and a laser, and the chance to choose a material that needs less maintenance.

Do I need to ask my neighbours before I replace the fence?

If the fence is on the property boundary, it usually belongs to you and your neighbours together. You then replace it in agreement, and the costs are usually shared. If the fence is fully on your own land, you do not need permission, but you also pay for the new fence yourself. If you rent, ask your landlord or housing corporation (woningcorporatie) for written permission. In an apartment building, check with your owners' association (VvE).

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes. We take down the old fence, including posts, concrete bases and gravel boards, and take the waste away. You do not need to arrange a skip. When you ask for a quote, tell us how long the old fence is and what it is made of, so we can include the removal in the quote.
