Garden gates made to measure
A made-to-measure garden gate is built for your opening and matches the fence next to it. ZuidHek makes and installs single pedestrian gates and double driveway gates, in composite or twin wire mesh, with solid gate hardware (poortbeslag): hinges, a mortice lock and, on double gates, a drop bolt.

A gate takes more strain than any other part of the fence. It opens and closes every day, catches wind and hangs only on its hinges. So a good gate starts with the post: a heavy gate post, deep enough and in concrete, that does not move.
We make the gate to fit your opening, with the same board, colour or panel as the fence next to it. A composite gate gets an aluminium frame so it does not sag. A twin wire mesh gate has a steel frame with the same mesh as the fence.
Before we start, we agree on the width, the opening direction and the lock with you. Does a car, trailer or ride-on mower need to get through? Does the gate open inwards or outwards? Where do the bins stand? These questions decide the size more than the drawing does.
Specifications
- Type
- Single gate (pedestrian gate) or double gates with two leaves, made to fit the opening.
- Frame
- Aluminium frame with composite infill, or a steel frame with twin wire mesh, in the colour of the fence.
- Width
- A pedestrian gate is usually about 1 m wide. For a driveway, double gates of about 3 to 4 m are common.
- Gate hardware
- Hinges, lock, handle, drop bolt and gate stop.
- Lock
- Mortice lock in the gate frame with a handle and cylinder, so you can lock the gate with a key.
- Gate posts
- Heavier than the posts in the rest of the line and set in concrete, because the full weight of the gate hangs on them.
- Opening direction
- Inwards or outwards, hinged left or right. We decide this based on the slope and the space behind the gate.
- Single pedestrian gate
- For people, bikes, bins and the lawnmower. About 1 m wide works well in practice. Narrower gets tight with a wheelbarrow.
- Double gates
- Two leaves for the driveway or a wide opening. One leaf is held in place with a drop bolt. You use the other every day as a pedestrian gate.
- Composite gate
- The same board and colour as your composite fence, in an aluminium frame. Solid, so the fence continues in one line.
- Twin wire mesh gate
- Steel frame with a panel in the same colour and mesh as the fence next to it.
How we install it
- 1
Measuring
We measure the opening, the ground height on both sides and the space the gate swings into.
- 2
Setting the gate posts
Heavy gate posts in concrete at the right depth, in line with the rest of the fence and at laser height.
- 3
Hanging and adjusting
We hang the gate, adjust the hinges so it swings freely without dragging on the ground, and line up the lock and stop.
- 4
Checking
Open, close, key in, drop bolt in its socket. We are only finished when everything works smoothly.

Good to know
- Look at the ground in front of the gate
- If the paving rises in the direction the gate opens, the gate will drag. Then let the gate open the other way or adjust the paving. Better to see this beforehand than on the first day you open it.
- Wide leaves pull on their hinges
- The wider a single leaf, the more it pulls on its hinges and post, and the sooner it sags. For a wide opening, double gates with two shorter leaves are usually the better choice.
- A solid gate catches wind
- A composite gate is a closed surface. In strong wind, do not leave it standing open but hold it with a drop bolt or hook. Otherwise a gust slams it against the post and the hinges and lock suffer.

Frequently asked questions
How wide should a garden gate be?
For a pedestrian gate, about 1 m wide works well: a bike, bin or wheelbarrow fits through easily. If a car or trailer must get through, double gates of about 3 to 4 m are common. Also measure your largest items, such as a ride-on mower or cargo bike, before you decide on the size.
Should I choose a single gate or double gates?
A single gate is simpler and is enough for a normal path into the garden. For wider openings double gates work better, because two shorter leaves pull less on their hinges. You hold one leaf in place with a drop bolt and use the other every day as a pedestrian gate.
Can a garden gate be locked?
Yes. A mortice lock with a cylinder goes into the gate frame, so you can lock the gate with a key. On double gates the lock is in the leaf you use every day, and a drop bolt holds the fixed leaf in place. If you want different hardware or a different lock, mention it when you ask for a quote.
Can you add a gate to my existing fence?
Often, yes. We remove part of the fence, set two heavy gate posts in concrete and hang the gate between them. Whether it works depends on the state of the existing posts and whether a matching board or panel is available. Send a few photos on WhatsApp and we will take a look.
